The Motivation to Exercise

It's time that I buckle down and lose weight.  I spend way too much time on excuses, including my knee hurts (it doesn't anymore, now it's just a go to excuse because I've spent months saying it when it did hurt), I don't have time (really, I don't have an hour to spend a day while the kids nap so I can look better and feel better and probably extend my life!), I don't like exercise (who cares, a lot of people don't), and many more.  Those are the top three though.

As you can see from the picture above, I'm not at a loss for exercise videos, I can work on cardio, flexibility, strength and have fun doing it with my arsenal of videos (yes, I've had many of them for YEARS).  In addition to this I also have a weight bench (which is buried under boxes of neglect), weights, a swiss ball, a bosu ball, yoga mats, blocks and straps, jump ropes, and I needn't forget, my own body weight! I have everything I need to exercise right at my fingertips except the motivation.  I'm great at doing a few push up's here and there but usually my steam runs out and I'm lucky if I continue a workout streak for longer than two or three days. I did okay with a personal trainer, but found my stressful and busy situation at the time hindered my ability to go to the gym during the prescribed play area hours for the kids, thus making it less motivational.

The weight is pouring on, I'm having more and more trouble finding clothes that fit me, and I've finally crossed the imaginary line where I notice in the mirror that omg!  I finally crossed into the world of plus sized and not just a beautifully thick woman, as a friend of mine calls me, (which I still am, but self perception is usually worse than anything).

Here is my plan: I'm going to start soul searching for my exercise motivation.  That little bit of push that will get me to keep up on my exercise every day (or at least five out of seven days a week).  While I'm spending time searching, I'm going to make it a point to do some kind of exercise everyday while the kids nap.  My goal will be at least 30 min of exercise, but as long as I do something I won't beat myself up, I know this habit takes time to build.  For the rest of this week I'll use some of the equipment and videos I already have, then this weekend I'll pick up Insanity from my nephew (yes, I know I'm crazy) and I'll do my best to do at least 5 min of that workout or more, then walk out the rest to stay moving.  I want to get to the point that I can do ALL  of it.

What I'd like to know from you is: What motivates you to exercise?  Maybe some of your motivations will inspire me to discover my own.

I don't exercise to lose weight, but to reclaim my sense of self and balance through Yoga. That's my motivation to wake up crazy early in the morning to contort myself into weird shapes - MySELF, I need it!

I've found that exercising helps me eat better, and eating better helps me exercise. I've also learned that your body composition is 85% what you put in your mouth and only 15% activity level. Make a conscious effort to be more healthy in ALL areas and you will begin to notice a change. I eliminated grains, sugar, and dairy from my diet last year and lost 60lbs. If I can do it, you can too!

I recently made the decision that I have to get off my backside because a) I really want to do a charity run next summer and b) my husband owes me a ride on the motorcycle and I know it'd be easier if we're not both overweight. I can't make him lose weight, but I can work on me.

Good luck on your weight loss!

I'm competitive so that's what motivates me to exercise. If I hear about one of my friends getting a new PR in a 5K, then I want to try and get a new PR (though it will NEVER happen since I set my PR when I was young..lol).

I wish I was competitive, but I'm not, lol. I never have been, at least not when it comes to exercise.

Good luck to you as well! I love that you have the "can't change them, but I can change me" attitude. That's one thing that keeps me going in many things. I've thought about doing a charity run of some kind. I might have to think about this and find someone to do it with me. I think the Color Run would be a blast!

I tried the reciprocity with diet and it didn't work for me. I eat fairly healthy (lots of produce, whole grains, etc), but for strength building purposes I have to get up and exercise. I applaude you on the will power to drop so many things from your diet, that's just too drastic for me. I know because I tried. For me diet comes down to balance and moderation. It has helped me as well.

I love yoga, but I can't do it on my own, and I can't find a teach that works for me. I had one when I was in college who was perfect, but unfortunately I can't have her anymore, lol. No one else measures up. But I might have to dig out my tapes and try again. I always loved yoga and I loved the way I felt when I did it. Built strength fast too!

Oy... I have to talk myself into getting up to get the remote myself and not have a kid bring it to me!!
I know, not helpful, huh?

I'm also starting a weight loss journey. I've been able to successfully go to the gym for almost a week now. My motivation is reminding myself that I want to be healthy.
